Gaming EuroCup movies Monday 22 May 2006
Last week ClanBase put some old EuroCup movies on Google Video for easy nostalgic viewing. The EuroCups are the European championships of online gaming that I set up with ClanBase founders Talita and Wob back in 2000. Last year we sold ClanBase but the EuroCups still go on; two months ago the finalists of the 12th season were flown to New York to play against the finalists of a new American mirror-version, the AmeriCup.

ClanBase and the EuroCup represent a past part of my life, so allow me to self-indulge and refer to some clips that show me as an organiser, a commentator and a participant in the olden days of the EuroCup. Click on "More..." to see them.
At the first ever EuroCup finals in May 2000 I decided on the spot to do live commentating of the matches. Nowadays all top gaming matches have live commentary but back then it was a pioneering effort that got me a lot of positive feedback - ánd a girlfriend :) At EuroCup II I actually lost my voice at the end of the second day of almost non-stop talking and had to skip a few games. This short clip shows some action from EuroCup V with commentary by me and a guy with a much better accent.

This movie about EuroCup V by OdB has interviews with many of the participants, and also one with me as the organiser that starts at 18:20. I was very smug after a smooth event :)

My own clan Cicatrix made it to the finals of the EuroCup once, in EuroCup III. We won only 1 out of 9 games there but it was already a big achievement for us to have made it that far with only the 4 best teams in Europe.

Starting at 02:30 the OdB movie of that event shows us at the end of that 1 game we won, with me coaching, followed by an interview. It's playing with the piano in the lobby there that made me decide to buy one (electric, of course) shortly afterwards.

The best EuroCup movie of course is still Wob's EuroCup III movie, which is a fantastic blend of action, music and editing. This movie was the first of its kind and imo still the best. It should really be downloaded and viewed at high quality, but you can also get a taste from the low quality Google Video version:
